Google celebrates the anniversary of Jean Macnamara life

The medical and scientific Dame Jean Macnamara was a pioneer in applying her tireless work ethic to better understand and treat various types of paralysis, including polio. Google celebrates today, through a doodle, his tireless work and his 121 anniversary of his birth.

Dr. Macnamara received a medical degree in 1925, just the same year that a polio epidemic hit the capital city of Melbourne. As a consultant and officer for the Victoria Poliomyelitis Committee, she focused her attention on treating and investigating the life-threatening virus, which also involved a separate risk for boys.

In collaboration with the future Nobel Prize winner Sir Macfarlane Burnet, he discovered in 1931 that there was more than one strain of the poliovirus, which was a fundamental step towards the development of the vaccine against this disease, which would be born almost 25 years later.

Because of her valuable struggle in seeking polio treatment and her commitment to rehabilitating patients, especially boys, she was appointed Lady Commander of the Order of the British Empire (DBE) in 1935.
