US proposal rejected, Afghan president offers new presidential election in the country

Afghan President Ashraf Ghani has rejected a proposal by the United States to form an interim government and expressed his intention to offer a new presidential election in the country.

According to details, two senior Afghan government officials have been quoted as claiming that Afghan President Ashraf Ghani is likely to offer new presidential elections to establish lasting peace in Afghanistan at an international gathering in Turkey next month.

Afghan President Ashraf Ghani will make the offer in response to a US proposal to form an all-party interim government, and if the Taliban agree to a ceasefire, presidential elections will be held as soon as possible.

An agreement reached last year between the United States and the Taliban agreed to complete the withdrawal of foreign troops from Afghanistan by May 2021, but the new US government has indicated it will review the agreement, saying it could extend the withdrawal.
